As part of the Provost's Office team, we implement policies and create programs that enable our faculty and other academic appointees to focus on their innovative research, teaching, and service responsibilities.

Your Role on the Team

Within the large, complex, and dynamic setting of the University of California, the Academic Labor and Employee Relations Analyst is a key member of the UCI Academic Personnel Labor and Employee Relations team (Academic LER). Academic LER works to enhance the relationship between the University and campus employees by providing direction and guidance on unions, policies, agreements, and more. Academic LER works closely with managers and supervisors across campus to ensure that the correct application of policies, procedures, and laws are being used to manage UCI's diverse and dynamic workforce. Through various forms of intervention, Academic LER offers balanced advocacy to protect respective rights of management and employees, and to facilitate a more harmonious work environment.

The Academic Labor and Employee Relations Analyst independently performs the full range of the responsibilities with the function. Provides analytical support and coordination for the Academic Personnel labor and employee relations functions. Conducts initial intake, preliminary assessment, evaluates merits, and prepares responses to employee complaints (union grievances requests for information, policy violation allegations, and unfair labor practice charges). Provides advice and counsel to assigned client groups; prepares directives, regulations, technical guidance, and other instructions for issuance to stakeholders, and works in a collaborative manner with others across the organization on such issues as performance management, organizational changes, workplace climate, supervisory/management training activities and other related areas. This is a full-time, hybrid position based out Irvine, CA.

As a seasoned, experienced professional with a comprehensive understanding of employee and labor relations, the Academic Labor and Employee Relations Analyst resolves a variety of complex employee and labor relations issues in imaginative and practical ways. The Academic Labor and Employee Relations Analyst exercises judgment and professional discretion to determine appropriate course of action, relying on experience within the field.

Reporting to the Academic Labor and Employee Relations Director, the Academic Labor and Employee Relations Analyst demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions requiring an orientation to service and support, significant attention to detail, and strong written and oral communication skills. The Academic Labor and Employee Relations Analyst prioritizes work assignments within appropriate timelines, adapts to changing priorities, and conducts complex and varied analyses to develop recommendations and may provide guidance to other academic personnel professionals.

UCI seeks candidates with employee and labor relations experience in a large, complex academic and health sciences setting, preferably within the University of California.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $77,000.00- $92,550.00 (Annual).

Required:

  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations.
  • Thorough knowledge of other areas of human resources.
  • Thorough knowledge of union / labor contracts.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of employee relations and labor relations practices and programs.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle very difficult or volatile situations / individuals effectively.
  • Experience providing employee relations and labor relations related support to assigned client groups.
  • Demonstrated experience with conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrated skills and abilities in leading management in the areas of conflict and change management.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise excellent judgment in responding to employee and labor relations related requests.
  • Thorough knowledge of organizational policies and procedures; knowledge of functional area and understands how work impacts other areas in Academic Personnel and the organization.
  • Demonstrated experience with applying employee relations specific concepts.
  • Understanding of the principles related to management, supervision and leadership to provide advice and counsel.
  • Demonstrated success in mentoring managers on the process of evaluating performance.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in labor and employee relations with progressive responsibilities, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Professional experience working in the University of California or other diverse postsecondary academic institution or other environment of similar complexity.




Preferred:

  • Master's degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field.
  • Juris Doctorate

  • The incumbent must be able to provide their own means of transportation to/from work locations.
  • This position will be required onsite and at variable hours during certain events and activities. Position eligible for hybrid work schedule.
