Job Description To serve as a civilian employee of the Indiana State Police (ISP) whose primary responsibility is to support the laboratory's responsibilities in polygraph examinations and associated court presentation of routine and non-routine cases of varied complexity and difficulty under general supervision. ***STARTING SALARY MAY BE ADJUSTED FOR EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING******FOR CURRENT STATE EMPLOYEES, ESTABLISHED SALARY RULES APPLY*** Current department employees should review Civilian Rule 2 (Salary, Pension, and Benefits). Job Duties

  • Conduct polygraph examinations and interpret results.
  • Acquire and maintain analytical proficiency in polygraph examinations.
  • Communicate findings of examinations to various elements in the criminal justice system including court testimony as an expert witness.
  • Maintain effective communication with the scientific and criminal justice communities and Department personnel.
  • Satisfactory completion of an ISP recognized polygraph examination training/testing program and competency testing.
  • Conduct polygraph examinations for investigative purposes.
  • Conduct polygraph examinations for pre-employment purposes of ISP and other state government agencies as required.
  • Conduct periodic administrative polygraph examinations as required.
  • Work under the direction of forensic supervisor including the review of records.
  • Maintain the polygraph equipment in good working order.
  • Communicate analytical procedures, methodology, policies, and conclusions to various elements in the criminal justice system including court testimony as an expert witness.
  • Participate in a proficiency testing program.
  • Participate in continuing education and training programs in specialized and general forensic science areas.
  • Maintain records of polygraph examinations in a secure manner and complete reports per Polygraph Procedure Manual and Laboratory policies.
  • Comply with Standard Operating Procedures, Rules, Regulations, and Laboratory policies.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Job Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree or higher required.
  • Natural science, forensic science, and/or criminal justice classes are desired.
  • Experience working criminal investigations desired.
  • Completion of an interview/interrogation course desired.
  • Basic knowledge of polygraph examination techniques desired.
  • Basic knowledge of theory and practical operation of polygraph instrumentation desired.
  • Ability to perform complex scientific procedures in an unbiased manner following the Polygraph Procedure Manual.
  • Ability to comprehend, demonstrate, and explain knowledge of theory and practical operation of various polygraph instruments and analytical techniques.
  • Ability to effectively operate various computer systems and software.
  • Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to adhere to established laboratory safety practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to testify as an expert witness in an objective, unbiased, and professional manner.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to travel by aircraft and other vehicles.
  • Ability to attend training at alternate locations for extended periods of time.
The successful candidate must submit to and successfully pass an initial, subsequent and periodic, security-related Departmental polygraph and psychological examinations. Must be able to successfully pass a background investigation. Applicants are asked to submit a complete work history.
